  1. If you were in charge of building a science museum what types of exhibits and attractions would you include? Why? What types of things do you find most interesting in museums? How do you think the people who planned the museum decided on what to include? Do you have suggestions?

    1. I agree with Ashley, if I was in charge of building a science museum I would include many different interactive activities because they are more fun than reading, but at the same time you people can learn. I will make these interactive hands on activities fun for both young kids, and adults. The types of things that I find most interesting in museums is the hands on activities where you can solve mysteries (like at the Crime and Punishment Museum in Washington D.C.), create things, and learn more through having fun. It seems that the people who planned what to include in the museum decided by choosing a lot of history from North Carolina. At the museum there is some paleontology that was found in North Carolina Triassic beds. The entire paleontology collection includes approximately 12 vertebrate and 22 invertebrate fossil like specimens. My suggestion to the museum is to have live animals like birds, snakes, and lizards be shown to the different people looking at the exhibits and letting them be held and interacted with by the people. I have not yet gone to the museum yet, but it looks like fun and I hope I can soon!

    2. Alex,
Why do we build museums? Is it to make money? entertain? educate? How are art, history and science museums different in their goals for existing? Do you think it is possible to visit a special place and have it change the future of a person? Could this possibly be a goal of the science museum? Please respond.

    3. If I were somehow put in charge of building a museum I would include many things. First I would put in the more traditional exhibits stating information about the subject at hand, but that would just be part of it. The rest of the museum would include more of hands on activities, some shows explaining certain things, and an area for hosting temporary exhibits that travel nationally. This is what I think is the most interesting part of a museum.

    4. If I were to be put in charge of building a science museum, I would put many different sections. One, about the new advancements in health technology, and how procedures were preformed long ago. Another section that I would put, is the advancements in space adventure. There would be many hands on activities like controlling an actual robot that is used to conduct health procedures in tight areas or maybe an air flight simulator. I find the building side of museums most interesting because I wonder who invented these items and what the first prototypes looked like. I think that the people who designed the museum by making a blog just like this and asked people what they found most interesting in museums and what they did not like. If they did not do this, I think this would be a very effective way to get peoples feedback on the museum and what they would like to see.

    5. I believe we build museums to both entertain and educate the community. At the same time of educating the community, the museum makes a profit. I believe this profit should be used to purchase new exhibits and further advance the inventory of the museum. I think it is possible for a person’s future to be changed by a visit to a special place. One example of a person being changed by a visit to the science museum is if a child or teen were to be going into the museum and seeing how fascinating science and nature really is. This could inspire those children or teens to try to make a difference or a career choice. One example of a difference is trying to get their family or school to recycle more, or be more energy friendly.

If you look at the Raleigh News and Observer newspaper from last Sunday, you will be able to see a story about this new science museum. The story says that one of the goals of this new extension to the museum is to use the 80,000 square feet of extra space to give more hands-on activities like touching exhibits or talking with scientists or researchers. As Brad Kiser of Moncure said "You can tell a kid a thousand times about something, but scraping a fossil for DNA is something he'll remember."

    6. Alex,
You have hit the nail on the head! I totally agree that museums are there to inspire and motivate people to think and solve problems. Without sources of inspiration, the world would never make progress! I hope that you will look for inspiration in all of the places that you go - if not the science museum then whatever other places you might visit! Thanks for your great comments, Alex. You have put into words the essence of what the museum is all about!

    7. Callum,
Have you read or heard about any particular part of the museum that might be of interest to you? Can you do a little research to see if you can find something that you would like to describe and explain how it interests you??? I am sure they have tons of computer program exhibits!

    8. Chris Raymond,

I think you are probably right about museum creators surveying lots of people to find out what to include in the museum. I think the test of any museum is if it is "lasting" - in other words, will people continue to come even after time has passed. I think that people get bored easily with museums and are looking to see new and more interesting things when they visit. It will be important for the management to keep the museum current and up-to-date. It takes a lot of work to keep kids engaged!
Thanks for your comment - do you plan on going to see the museum? I am sure they have some things that would interest you.

    9. I did try to go to the museum over the weekend but the line was to long for me. I decided that I could go this weekend because I hope there will not be as many people. I have heard that there is a 10,000-gallon aquarium and I can't wait to see it. I also think that this blog is a great idea because it allows everyone to say what he or she is thinking about this topic. This also allows everyone to say things that they may not be able to say in class. I hope that we can continue this.

    10. Chris,
I am glad you like the BLOG. I can see you in a science field one day, so I hope you are thinking along those lines. You would make a great engineer! Let me know if you go to the museum - I know you will enjoy it! Maybe you will be designing and/or building a museume one day! I would not be surprised! Thanks for your comments and feel free to jump back in if you like to add to what others are saying . . .

    11. If I were to build a museum one day some exhibits that I would include in my museum would be a huge area of different kinds of fish, digging for fossils with a big walk around with different dino's, a 3d movie theater that educates people on saving our Earth and also history of the Earth, a solar system exhibit with tons of hands on activities like indoor stargazing, a life size space ship that kids can go into and pretend to drive, and more. All of these exhibits are hands on and are no just reading things and understanding them. Its about educating different kinds of kids all ages to get into the field of science so that we can have a better world in the future. Things that I find most interesting in museums are big fish tanks with an explanation of different kinds of fish in them and some information about them. Well, people who decided to plan this museum looked at all of the different and successful museums in the world and looked at what made them successful. This would include large fish tanks, special events every once in a while and lots of other stuff. My suggestion for the new science museum is to have an exhibit that has never been put on display before.

    12. Kaitlyn,

How do you feel about live animals (other than fish) in museums? Do you think that draws in people and is it fair to the animals to confine them in cages for their life????? What about models of animals instead - would it be just as good or not??? What about technology (virtual exhibits). Do you like to manipulate computer programs at museums? What about wait time? Would you be willing to wait in a long line to experience something like this? What do you think???

      Delete
    13. Even though live animals are really cool to have in museums, I don't think that keeping them in a cage for the rest of their lives is a christian or even a good thing to do. in stead of having live animals or even models, I would have technology come into play. I would have a program that is hands down 3D and make people believe that the things that they are looking at are right in front of them. For wait times, I would defiantly wait a long time to see something like this.

      Delete
    14. Katlyn,
I think that having the technology component would be great. However, could you do that sort of thing at home without going to a museum??? Does there need to be a museum if you can assess a computer program at home? What is the benefit of having a museum if there are no live animals and everything is technology based? Do you thin that science museums are going to become extinct???

      Delete
    15. Yes actually I do think that museums are going to become extinct because of all the technology that we are inventing today. We really won't need to have museums anymore. An example would be a video that I found on youtube called "A Day Made of Glass". It shows you everything that is to come in the near future. This is what I think will happen to the museums as well. Feel free to look it up and I bet you your mind will be blown.

      Delete
    16. Wow! I think that is a scary video! I hope it does not come to pass - I think technology makes us stop talking to people and getting to know them. A computer screen is just to impersonal! Thanks Katlyn for the youtube video! That is definitely food for thought. . .

    17. If I was in charge of a museum I would include exibits showing as much attractions that my visiters would like. Like the air and space museum I would include air, and space, but not specialize in just air and space. When I go to museums I enjoy taking my time to read all the information and exibit information. I also like hands on exibits, so I would include at least 3 hands on activities my museum. Like I am doing, many people plan out what activities and events will by exibited in museums.

    18. If i had to open an exhibit in a natural science museum, it would include a walk through the era's. Starting with the creation of earth, there would be a path looping through scenery describing each era from Precambrian to the modern era. This exhibit would include scale models of different plants and animals found in each era.

      Delete
    19. If I were put in charge of a museum, first of all, I would make it stand out with lights, waterworks, and lots of color to attract some attention. Also, I would always be adding new educational toys and hands-on activities. I remember once I went to a museum with a bed of nails on it and you could lay on it and not get hurt because your body weight was spread out over 300 nails. Another thing is that I used to watch a show called Mythbusters, a show where they test all kinds of myths and make things explode. Having a special day like "Exploding Tuesday" where a specialist would come out explode stuff through chemistry then later explain what happened would bring a lot of attraction in my eyes.

      Delete
  2. I would include lots of hands on exhibits and crafts in my museum. I would include this because I love to actually create something instead of looking in museums. I find these hands on exhibits the most interesting to do. The people who planned the museum thought of things that adults and kids would both enjoy. My suggestion is to put activities for kids and some science history to read for the adults.

    1. This sounds like a good idea, Ashley. You are the first to respond. Are you going to the museum this weekend? It should be amazing! I agree with what you suggest, but I think when you have so many people walking through, it is difficult to have exhibits set up where kids can create something and still leave the exhibit suitable for others to follow behind them. Maybe this could be a virtual creation so that it could be erased. Do you mean actually make something with concrete things??? What did you have in mind? Maybe like digging for fossils or doing an experiment?

      Delete
    2. I really want to go see the museum! I do not know if I can yet though. I do agree that my hands on idea might get crowded, but I think that Christine's idea with the movie and the simulators are a good idea! But I would have like a different virtual and concrete activity for each exhibit. For example: if it was a fossil exhibit, digging for fossils and watching a dinosaur clip or for an animal exhibit, different animal coloring sheets and mabe different like furs of animals to feel.

      Delete
    3. Ashley,

Remember that museums have all different ages of people visit. You would need to have something to attract and interest people of all ages. Any other ideas???

      Delete
    4. I think that if they had statues to look at if you like to look and not read, but then under the statue a paragraph of information about it for people who like reading to read it.

      Delete
  3. I agree with Ashley:) Museums are boring if all there is to do is read a bunch of stuff. I went to a zoo kinda place one time where you could dig for fossils and keep them! They were fake of course, but still really cool. I would put something like that in my museum. Also, i would put a little theater that could have a bunch of different movies playing throughout the day. The movies would be all about what was in the museum. I would also have simulators because those are fun:) I think that when people are planning a museum that they think "how can we be different." There are like millions of museums in the world, and they all sort of start to blend together. So new museums want to think of exhibits that will stand out and make them interesting.

    1. Christine,
I think you are absolutely correct! Hopefully, our new museum will do what you have suggested. It becomes difficult to meet the needs of everyone in one museum, butI believe this one is definitely targeting young people who might enter a field of science. All it takes is something like a visit to a special museum to inspire a person and it can change their life! Hope you get to go sometime and check it out! Thanks for sharing your ideas.

    2. I agree with both Ashley and Christine, because when we went to DC the museums we went to all had interactive displays while also having factual information, which i think fits most peoples interests. If I built a museum, i would include cool simulaters like in the air and space museum.I think that those kind of exhibits build knowledge while also compliments a good time. I like Christines idea of a movie theater. That seems like a great idea.

    3. Mrs Moser,
i agree with how you said that museums have to incorporate stuff for people of all ages in order to be successful. I visited the website of the new museum and i was reading the EVENTS section and it looked like it had some really cool stuff. Today it has special programs about national voice day and "i speak for the trees." There is an art gallery and a scientific research gallery. There is even an exhibit that shows photos of wildlife in North Carolina. All of these exhibits definitely reach out to all different people of interest. I like how this new museum is incorporating all the subjects like history, art, science, and current events! I hope i'll be able to go soon!

    4. Christine,
How long do you think the museum will "last" ? In other words, how long before we "out grow" or become bored with the things in the museum??? Do you think museums have an "expiration date"????

  4. Matthew,
Will you be going to the museum this weekend? If not, I hope you will try to go soon. It will probably surprise you with all of the new and innovative things inside. Thanks for sharing your ideas.

  5. I agree with everyone about the hands on activities because those keep you interested in what you are doing rather than just walking through the museum staring at stuff in glass cases. But I also think that they should have demonstrations so you can see all the items that they are exhibiting in action. This will help you learn better because you remember stuff better if you see it, rather than just reading a little caption under the exhibit.

  6. Cameron,
Have you been to the Life and Science Museum in Durham? How about Discovery Place in Charlotte? Do you prefer a museum that is just for kids or do you think it is best to have mixture of attractions? Are you going to the museum this weekend? If you go, let me know what you think. Check online and see what it has and maybe you will get interested in going. How much did it cost to build? How long has it been in the process of being built?

    1. The museum cost $56 million to build and took a little over a decade. This museum features many different activities. It has hands on activities, short movies, and laboratories for research and teaching about many different subjects. A couple of these subjects are astronomy and paleontology. I have not been to the museum but I saw some reviews that seemed like the museum was very good.

  7. I agree with everyone so far. Over Spring Break I had to go to a lot of museums but the one I liked the most was the one that had a Mythbuster's exhibit where you could actually do some of the things they did on the show. Museums can really be boring when all you can do is walk around and look at exhibits. When people planned the new science museum here, I bet they thought about what was fun and interesting but also important science to learn about.
I saw the picture of the museum and I think it looks really impressive! This will probably make people want to go to it.

  8. I dont really like spending time looking at thngs through glass. This is why i think that the idea of hands on activities is such a good idea. I think it would attract more people and even atract the poeple that dont like museums. I really wish i could go to the opening of the museum but i do not have time. The new exhibits seem really exciting i really wish i could make it.

  9. The new museum looks a lot better than all the other museums because it has actual animals and hands on activities. It's also based on North Carolina's geography. I also don't think I'm gonna go to it, because museums aren't really my thing. I think they're kind of boring. If I had my own museum, I think it would include things for kids to keep them interested. Something like the flight simulators at DC, and the digging up fossils idea is pretty good too. Then, I would have all the regular museum stuff to keep old people interested. My museum would appeal to everyone.

  10. I would definitley make my museum more interactive. I would want to do this because interactive museums attract full families, kids, and schools. And all of these people bring in money, which every business needs. In museums, i find interactive things most attractive. i also find moments where you can say "Whoah im standing where this or that happened 500 years ago." very cool too. I think the people thought of things that every museum needs. But i also think they knew too add, things that atract all sorts of crowds.

  11. I agree with all these brilliant explanations. I would really like a lot of hands on activities and there are because I was researching the mueseum. There all also live animals which I really like looking at. There also many exciting programs! The goal of this museum is to make North Carolina citizens realize North Carolina's distinct geography, prehistoric pasts, geology, and plants and animals. I am really hoping to go to museum but I probably can't because I have a busy weekend.

  12. Ok students (Matt S., Cameron, Alex, Natalie, Linh, Christine, and Matthew I., Matthew Moody, etc.

We have the general idea that you would like the museum to be interactive, but you have NOT done your research! Either research what is "at the museum" or "actually go" to the museum to see what is really there! You are all writing in general terms and I would like more specific information. You can read the N&O, google the museum, or take a "fieldtrip" downtown to find out what is going on with the new addition. The lines are long this weekend, but you have until May 8 to "put some meat" behind your comments. I want specific descriptions and observations about particular attractions. Back to the BLOGGING once you have done the background work!!!!! We will discuss on Monday in case you do not check the BLOG again! Let me know if you have questions and I will gladly respond!

    1. The new wing of the science museum sounds like it has a lot more of the hands on activities like i said it should have. One feature of is a theater that shows images shown by NASA. Here it shows all the things acting around earth. This also shows the population growth as well as many other intersting features. Also, at this museum there is an investaging lab that allows you to do some hands on activties. In this lab there are muliple things you can do looking at soil samples and finding differences in some. Also, in this lab you can use tools that scienctists use and look at the parts of dinosours bones. There is also a large area that shows things have changed over time, which sounds very cool.

Thank you for your ideas. Do you see yourself in a field to science one day? What area of science do you like best? Maybe if you go to the museum you might get inspired!

    3. I really wanted to go to the grand opening of the museum. I hope that I will get a chance to soon. I think that the giant globe that shows the "patterns of nature" is really cool and that it will hopefully attract a lot of people. Apparently the new museum will have lots of new interactive exhibits, like Natalie said. I found some other exhibits like the ones she found, like being able to predict the weather and another were you take a simulated submarine ride. You can also actually talk to some of the scientists and researchers. I think that is probably the coolest thing. You can't do that in many museums, and hopefully it will help explain some of the science to people at the museum. Also, later people will be able to talk to researchers in the veterinary center (this wasn't at the grand opening.) I think it would be so great to go!

    5. Natalie,

I appreciate your honesty in saying that science may not be in your future. Do you have any idea about what you might like to do one day? Do not give up on science totally - you may change your mind since there are so many careers related to science.

    6. The new part actually has interactive activities like I said i like. Even cooler is that it has images from NASA, which can educate people who don’t know a lot about space, or what/how NASA does. Another very cool thing is that it will have real research scientists and their work to show to everyone. This can help to prepare students to fulfill themselves as the new generation of scientists and hopefully inspire them.

    7. I don't think that I'm going to go into a field of science, but the museum does seem cool with all its features, like the NASA images, the investigation lab, and the paleontologist tools. Although, museums aren't really my thing, and I get bored by them pretty easily. I hope this new museum can change my view of museums.

When you are famous on Broadway, I will remember you as an eighth grader in science class saying that you would love to see the Carolina Emerald display! How cool is that!

  16. I would like to see the new globe. It looks very cool. It's a lot bigger than any other globe. I heard that there are a lot of hands on activities that sound cool like DNA extractions. There is also a very large telescope on the roof that would be cool to use. It seems like a good tourist attraction to Raleigh, too.

  17. As almost everyone has already said, hands-on activities definitely give museums more excitment. As well as this, the large globe on the outside will attract people. I have always been a person who likes to go to museums because I learn so much without having to stare at a book for memorization. I would love to go soon. Maybe my family and I will go today since it's so cloudy (with low pressure :)). The things that interest me in school and in museums are usually things that apply to me in some way. I love learning about our world and everything that's in it- as well as the rest of the universe- but sometimes learning about events that happened in our past can be a bit boring.

  18. Marco, Do you think it is possible to have a museum that has exhibits that interest all ages and types of people? Is it possible to do a good job with a museum if you tray to target everyone? Would little kids understand the DNA extraction? What makes this DNA extraction exhibit different from others at other museums? Did you go?

    Lauren,
What specific exhibit or attraction do you think would be most appealing to you? When you say you like things that apply to you in your own life, what exactly do you mean? What topics most interest you? Hope you got to go on Sunday!

    1. I like learning more about how Earth formed than, for example, the War of 1812. I realize how important it can be to know about our past so we can improve it for the future, but I've always been a more science loving person. That is why I loved learning about Earth's history, and why I can't wait until we do our space unit. I enjoy learning more about the bigger picture rather than just a small part of our world. Does that make any sense? Well, I hope you get my point.

I didn't get to go to the museum today but mentioned it to my mom. We'll definitely go sometime in the next few weeks because it looks so interesting. Have you gone/ are planning to go Mrs.Moser?

I did not go this weekend, but will go soon, I may need a full day to really check it out. I guess when you love science you can spend more time looking and exploring. It is my goal to learn something new every day. The museum will be a good place to make that happen. Feel free to respond to any of the questions I am asking others - I would love to hear your ideas.

    3. I think that there could be a museum that has exhibits for all ages, it would just be very expensive, hard and time consuming to make. It is not easy to get little kids to find something cool at a museum. Little kids would not understand the DNA extraction, but older people probably would, and that's who it's targeted at. I wish I could go, but I don't have the time to go.

Do not close any doors to your future. Give it some time and you may change your mind. I could see you getting into engineering one day or maybe computer science. You never know what might inspire you! You like to solve problems - you play chess, and that is problem solving, so do not say NEVER yet! You could be good in science if you tried a little harder. Life is not always about what is easy . . .

  19. This new addition to the science museum looks very interesting. I am especially interesyed in the new lab, the daily planet and the 10,000 gallon aquarium that has recently been built. Like almost everyone that has blogged so far I enjoy hands on activities. They help me learn more information than just a small caption under a picture.I am also interested in the new 10,000 gallon aquarium they have recently added. I have always been interested in aquarium and I am sure this one is just as good as any. I even have a few aquariums myself. The daily planet that sits in front of the museum looks very cool because of it's a very unique design. I hope to visit this museum soon and see if it is as good as it seems.

  20. Chris,
What types of fish and other types of organisms are in the aquarium? How many different species? Do you think that a museum can change a person in such a way as to influence their career path in life? Is the point of the museum simply to get media attention or is it something more? Since the museum was free this weekend and the cost to attend is not very high, do you think the museum was built to make money? Why build museums anyway?

  21. Whenever i go to a museum i never find it intersting, because all you do is read about stuff and its not fun. So dont get that much out of it when i go to a museum. Like other people have said i would include a lot of hands on activities to make it more fun to learn about the things museum. So this way your learning things but its also fun. After a while just reading about things in the museums can get kind of boring, so thats why museum should include some fun things to get people more interested in the museum.

Do you feel as if you have to read everything in the museums? Could it be possible to only read certain things and then come back to take a closer look on another visit? When I see school kids go through museums they rarely read anything - they just look, laugh and talk before moving on to something else. How do you feel about have an assignment given when you visit a museum? Does that help you find particular information or does it distract from you enjoying the museum? What do you think?

  22. To start, if I were the person that got to design the museum I would add alot of hands on activities and some big motels. I would also, on the opening day only, have giveaways for coupons and/or prizes. The museum is filled of exhibits such as, live animals, hands-on activities and exciting programs. There are also some special exhibits such as the wild life in North Carolina and the Genghis Khan. I will not be going but I wish I was.

Do you want people to come because they might win something or do you think people would come anyway? Sometimes museums try to be more about attracting people than anything else. I guess it depends on the real reason the museum was built. Why do you think this addition was made to the science museum? To make money? entertainment? education? or something else????? Please respond.

    2. I think the combo of the fun exhibits and the prizes. To use cool features so that kids will discover that science is fun. I think it was added to have education and entertainment combin and to make it fun.

    3. Sam,
You make this sound like a fair or carnival- is that what you would want your science museum to be like?
Think about it. Do museums have an expiration date? Why or why not???

      Delete
    4. I think of it a little of both. The museum is more important but there is also a little fun. It is not completely fun but mostly museum. I think that museums do have an expiration date because we are always making history and older history is becoming boring.

  23. Lauren, I am glad you enjoy the "big things" in science, but remember that the little things make up the big things! I personally like the cycles and order that there is in the universe! To me, the cycles that continually make the universe run smoothly are fasinating! To think that God created it all "blows my mind!". Who could look at creation and not believe in God???

Lauren, Why do people build museums? What is the goal behind it? Is it a business to make money? Is it entertainment? Or is it something much bigger? Please respond. I did not fight the crowds this weekend to go to the museum, but have read extensively about it. I will go when there are not so many people and I can savor each exhibit! I love museums!

    1. Thank you for telling me your oppinion on the little things that make up our world. It makes me think a little. I try not to think too much about what's science and what's religion in the world. Did God suddenly make the world, or is the big bang theory true? These are questions that I honestly don't want to know the answer to. I want to believe that God has made everything individually with his own love and care. No matter what, I'll always know how much God loves all of us.

Museums, in my oppinion, are not to make money (for the most part). They are a form of entertainment. In today's society, entertainment is one of the most powerful things out there. Youtube videos can go viral in a matter of days. People are always talking about sports and who won. America LOVES entertainment! I believe that this is why actors and athletes make so much money. Anyway, other than as a source of entertainment, museums provide a good source of history. They are reputable sources that can be trusted for correct information. If anyone wants to know about a specific event or time in history, I guarentee there is a museum containing it.

    2. Lauren,

I do believe you are correct in how important "entertainment" is to our society! Sometimes I wonder about the things churches, museums, and other places resort to in order to attract people through the doors! Have we become so shallow that it takes "fire crackers and balloons" to get us to actually look at something??? It is so different from the past - I guess I have that point of view since I am older, but this is your world and that is just the way it is. I think the huge globe on the museum was built to attract people; the huge aquarium is certainly a drawing card as well. Hopefully, people will look a little further to discover the true value of the musuem rather than simply focusing on the beauty and unique points. Lauren, you make me so happy when you give your testimony to your belief in God and His creation of the world! I am like you in that I do not need to know all of the answers to my questions - I can simply believe with all of my heart that God is our Creator and Savior! What peace that gives me! Thank you so much for all of your thoughtful posts! You make me have such faith in the future with young people like you in charge! You are awesome!

  24. If I were to build a science museum I would definitely include hands on exhibits and have more creating or gaming kind of stuff like the crime and punishment museum in D.C. One thing that I always found boring was all the reading you have to do, so I would include lots of videos and try to make it so the people who visit it wouldn't have to read a lot to get information. I think it is more important for a museum to be more for the kids because if the kids want to come than the adults will come too. I think that the people who planned the museums want everything to be pleasing to the eye and to stand out.

Ryan, what types of things would you include? Do you think things that you interact with or things that you just watch would be better? Would it be helpful to have a scientist standing at the exhibits to talk to people about what they are seeing? Do you think museums are for everyone or do you think there are people who can get inspired by simply reading a book? The expense of building interractive exhibits is high, so it is important that whatever they use is good for a large population of visitors. Hope you get to go to see the museum soon.

  25. I think this new museum has so many new exhibits that make it unique. Like the Science Immersion Theater which gives visitors a 360 view of all the natural wonders of Earth. Also, there is an exhibit called the Diversity of Life which gives information on some new species that have been found and "how do we know" investigations. It will show natural wonders of Earth, the effect of rapid population growth, rising sea levels, and hurricanes. But, the new exhibit that I'm most excited about is the 10,000-galloon aquarium. It showcases many fish like the lionfish and Atlantic stingrays. The research behind the aquarium is to show how the lionfish will affect our coastal fisheries. This new museum is definitely unique and that's what makes a museum stand out to people. I like museums that have hands-on activities (like everyone else is saying) and has something no other museum has. Like the globe that is on the side of this museum. This will make it more interesting for the younger population who think that museums are really boring. Also, it'll be a different way of educating people besides having signs everywhere. I hope I can go to see the museum soon!

Thanks for the great summary of some of the special features at the museum! I think I will love the Diversity of Life exhibit! That is my true love - the order and cycles in nature make it so magical to me! How can our world work with such rhythm when people are so destructive with natural resouces? I do hope that you can visit soon and get an overview of what is there. Who knows, it may inspire you to learn even more about a certain topic! I cannot help but believe that the new addition will increase the interest in science among young people! We need new thinkers to solve the many problems in the world! I am sure that you will be one of those that will contribute to make the world a better place! Thanks for sharing your ideas!

  26. I agree with Mia, a museum needs to be fun, interesting, but informative all at the same time. I can't say that I love museums that just display old artifacts with some information on the sign next to it, because I won't remember anything that I saw at the museum when I get home. If I were in charge of creating a museum I would have it be fun and informative so that children and adults would go home and think about the cool hands-on exhibit that they got to participate in. This way they would remember the facts about it too. In the new museum for example, they have an activity called Bellybutton Biodiversity where you see what lives inside your bellybutton. That draws me in and I am sure it would be very memorable. I would also learn about many types of sea organisms in the 10,000-gallon aquarium while I enjoy watching the fish swim around and interact with other fish. I haven't gotten to go to the museum yet, but I hope I can go soon!

    1. Logan,
Why do you think this museum was expanded? Wasn't the old one enough? What is the purpose of attracting people (especially young people) to a science museum?

      Delete
    2. I think that this museum was expanded because everyone who wanted to go to this museum had seen everything the museum had to show. These people got tired of seeing the same thing each time they visited. I think the museum owners thought it was time to add on to the old museum and build extraordinary things to attract the youth of today, hence the 50 foot globe outside the building. By attracting more people to come to the museum, they can be entertained and inspired (as Mrs. Moser said in class) to do something and change the world to make it a better place.

      Delete
    3. Logan,
The museum is state owned. They are funded by grants, tax dollars, and donations. I do not think they are going to make very much money so inspiring young people is probably the biggest reason the museum exists. Do you think that by having "flashy exhibits" the museum can attract more people and accomplish its goal of interesting kids in science? How much is too much to draw in people? Do you think that because young people are used to being entertained, they need to have "colorful, flashy" things to get their attention? Would you go to a museum if it were "old fashioned" and only contained exhibits in glass cases with lots of reading??? What do you think museums will look like in 50 years from now???

      Delete
    4. I do think that flashy exhibits will interest kids today, but there will also have to be some information in the exhibit to teach the kids something about what they are getting inspired about. I don't think that museums can have too much flash, unless they make a roller coaster or something that extreme. Drawing in people today takes more effort because they want to be entertained, and don't focus on learning. I, being one of those people, most likely wouldn't go to a dull or old fashioned museum. If people wanted to learn about something, they would just use the internet to find the information that would already be in the museum, but those people wouldn't have to leave their homes. This is why I hypothesize that in 50 years, there will be no museums, except for online museums. Technological advancements will overcome the desire to go to a museum and read about history, art, or science. Instead, people will virtually go to a museum online without having to physically leave their house.

  28. If I was to be in charge of building a science museum, I would include many different interesting sections. Including a section of hands on experiments. And the other being an area of just facts and sightseeing not hands on activities. In the hands on area, there would be activities like watching movies that explain things, also like trying to create a robot from scrap pieces, and other arts and crafts, experiments, etc. In the viewing section, i would put it in the front of the museum just so the people would get an idea of what its going to be like when they come inside to the hands on activities part.
I think once people have gone through the museum, done some or all the activities, they should write, on a sheet of paper provided for them, what they experienced, what should change or be kept the same, etc. Also, if they can't write a response in the museum, the blog is a great way for people to express their feelings about the museum.

I like your idea for keeping a museum current and interesting. I think the problem comes with the expense of the exhibits. It is not possible to redo things constantly. Many of the exhibits and attractions cost millions of dollars to construct. I think we need creative people to come up with better ways to build museums that will excite people about science. Have you ever been to a museum or place in the world that really inspired you??? Do you think that a museum can do that for a person??? Why or why not?

The new section of the Natural Science museum looks very cool! The thing that I like about it is that its not just walking through pictures with captions below them, its more of a hands on activity kind of museum. Inside you perform labs, and use high tech equipment. The best part I think is that you get to feel what its like to be in a submersible 2,000 feet below sea level! These activities will help people have more fun while being more educating than a regular museum. This new section will also make kids want to explore in the fields of science. Overall, the museum looks very exciting and I would love to visit it someday.

Drew! WOW! A submersible! That would be an awesome thing to experience. I hope they have safety features in place to warn people who might have problems with this type of thing. I also have trouble with "lots of reading" related to exhibits. The new museum has scientists on duty that will explain things so that you can hear it rather than reading. Does that sound like a good idea? Thanks for your ideas.

I was not able to make it to the grand opening of the science museum On April 20th. After doing some research I do plan on trying to convince my parents to take me. I think some of the interesting exhibts at this place are the dinasour exhibit, fish exhibits, and the mountain exhibits. The dinasoaur exhibits caught my eye because they have some of the most completed artifacts in the world. I feel that the ocean exhibits are cool beacause the ocean is something that is not to easy to explore and it is very interesting to see what kind of creatures crawl around in that merky water.I also liked the mountain exhibit because it represents the mountains fantatically. It features a 20 ft flowing waterfall, live animals, and other extrodinary things. Another thing that really captured me was nearly everything in the museun is alive or made from real animal skins and hides. The museum features well over 1000 living animals and about 1.5 million specimens to look at. If I can go to this museum I do really look forward to seeing all the animals alive and well roaming through their habitats so I can see how animals do live and function in their everyday lives. This museum is great and I dont think I would change a thing about it.

    Matt,

What age group do you think will benefit from this museum most? Do you think the target audience is young people like yourself who may one day enter a field of science? What do you think?

  31. The one thing that I think definitely makes this museum unique is the huge globe. I have never seen anything like it, which makes me curious. I haven't gone yet, but it looks like a fun field trip! If I could add anything I wanted into a museum, I would make it very active. Science is all about exploring and finding out new things, so what better way to do just that than trying the concepts yourself? The most interesting things in museum for me are looking at the exhibits. It’s a funny feeling when you look at something that you have been looking at your entire life in a new and different perspective. I think that the people who find out what to put in museums look at it through the viewers' perspectives. Whatever seems more interesting or fun would probably make the cut. If I had suggestions to add, I would probably add a game or race testing how much you know about different concepts. Other than that, If I visited this museum in particular, I would go to the Museum Auditorium or the Windows on the World exhibit.

Thank you for your thoughts. In the museum would you use computer programs to set up games or would you try to make everything hands-on with actual materials? When real materials are used, it costs a great deal to keep replacing them, plus it can get messy with lots of people coming through. Do you think that museums have a "life expectancy"? In other words do they get outdated and fail to interest people? How long do you think an average museum should last before it needs an update? It all costs lots of money - do you think the cost if worth the benefits?
Let me know what you think and thank you for giving your thoughts!

    1. I would love to make the activities real-life: I was thinking a race through a maze, but you have to stop at every turn and answer one question currectly in order to keep on going. But because of the high costs, I would make that into a computer game. I'm pretty sure that museums do get outdated. Either the concepts/material is old news, or everyone has already seen the exhibits. I think that every year a museum should get at least one new exhibit. It would definitely pay for itself if it is popular- it all depends on how the viewers react to the exhibit itself.

Thank you for blogging and sharing your ideas. I talked to someone tonight who has been to the museum. I will share what I learned with your class tomorrow. I think as time goes by and technology continues to evolve, it will take more and more exciting exhibits to attract people and keep their attention. That is a little scary when you think about it! I think the old time museums are a thing of the past! Maybe we will be able to push a button one day and immediatly be taken to a virtual museum without leaving our homes. Wouldn't that be awesome???

Does it excite you to think about the world of the future or does it scare you just a little bit? Do not be afraid - the world is exciting and you will want to enjoy all of the changes that technology and science make possible. There was a cartoon called the Jetsons that I watched when I was young - it was all about pushing buttons and getting everything delivered with the touch of a switch. They used jets to go from one planet to the other. It was silly, but it made me think how the world might change. I think we have to just be careful not to lose the simple things that make life so good - like the talent show today! You were awesome! What do you see yourself doing in 20 years? Think about it and let me know your thoughts. . .

    5. I have to say that it both excites me and scares me. The future, I mean. There is just so many things that could happen. Thank you, the talent show was nerve-wracking but I loved putting myself out there. I honestly don't know what I'll be doing in 20 years. I love to read and write, and I've been told millions of times that I'm good with little kids. So... a teacher? But I also love decorating so I may get interested in interior design. I may just keep on walking on the path I'm on right now, and see where it will lead me.

I wouldnt like to work in a museum though, because i think it would be boring work- it would be cool to work if the job was interesting enough, like a night guard or an interesting exhibit. I do think that musems have an expiration date, however. The internet is taking over and by the time a new museum is built, the information in it will be outdated. The only reason i think museums will not disappear will be because of ancient relics and other antiques. I think that once the "older generation" is gone and technology becomes more engrained in the culture with all groups of people, museums could possibly disappear. Why go when you can turn on your computer and see everything just as well - maybe even better. The submersible at the new museum could probably be done with technology and a 3-D computer screen. Of course this is way into the future. "Older people" (like me) really do enjoy museums! It gives us something to do! (Ha! Ha!) Thanks for your comments and I will watch with interest as you move on through school. My bet is on you being an engineer!

I love the idea going to a museum and learning, not just about the history, but about nature. I've always wanted to learn why fireflies light up. I also want to learn more about nature. What there is that animals do, and all of that stuff. If I had a museum, I would have hands on activities for kids. I would also have exhibits on what our Earth is like today, and how it could be in the future if we took care of it and if we don't take care of it.

I agree with your comments. Do you think seeing examples of nature (plants, animals, etc.) makes people think before they do harmful things? I know that people love to see live animals in museums, but do you think it is OK to put animals in captivity for the amusement of people??? Do you think having live animals at a museum adds interest to it? What about the quality of life for the animals? What do you think about seeing models or "stuffed animals" in museums? Are live ones better? What do you think???

    ReplyDelete

    1. I think that live animals definitely adds a new experience to the museum. However, I don't really know about the quality of life. I guess you can try and compare it to two things: living in the zoo and in the wild. One good thing is that it can protect the animals, which is especially good for endangered animals. I think that if you want to go see live animals at a museum, the museum should be a certain size in order for the animals to have a good quality life. I think that from our standpoint live animals are better but I am not so sure about life for the animals. Another thing that you could do is go to like an aquarium. I really like aquariums sometimes more than an animal exhibit in a museum just because the entire place is devoted to animals. Really, in order to offer the most exhibits and be better for the animals, I think you should have almost two places; a zoo/aquarium and then a normal museum. Maybe you could put them next to each other?!

  40. If I was in charge of building a museum it would have some interactive exhibits. This would bring in more people and it would make the kids want to come. I would also have an area for adults where it is less interactive. This would get the older and more mature audience to come to the museum. The only down side to having interactive parts in the museum is that you would have to replace some things in the interactive part of the museum.
Although I did not go to the museum ,yet, it looks like it is a lot of fun. There are supposed to be a lot of hands on activities. There are labs in the museum where some scientists will actually be. The scientists will be doing research in the new museum. Visitors will be able to talk to the scientists and ask them questions. I cannot wait to go and see the museum myself.
The people who must have planned the making of the museum must have thought of all the advantages and disadvantages. They had to think of the best way to attract people. That is most likely why there is the giant globe outside the museum. Then they had to make the visitors want to keep looking so that is why there are hands on activities. But they also have to consider money. If they wanted to make the museum better they could probably make it like you are the scientist making the discovery so you understand what processes the scientists have to go through.

I agree with your comments. It is a hard decision to decide what goes into a museum. You want it to be the very best things to attract people. I think you are exactly correct. If the museum can inspire at kids to work hard to learn all they can about science then it will be money well spent. I think by having scientists on hand in the museum to answer questions, they are trying to get everyone excited about science in general. How do you feel about having live animals in the museum? Do you think that is necessary or would it just be cruel for the animals? Do you think more people come when there are live animals???

A special exhibit being shown is the Prehistoric North Carolina. I really would like to go see this exhibit because I love dinosaurs and it would be cool to see the ones that lived right in our state. Anyways if I were to build a museum it would be sort of like this one because there are different sections but they are related to each other too. Thank you for your comments. Why do you think that simulators are so effective in museums? What safety issues might be important? How important is it to continue to upgrade museums? Do people get tired of "old-style" museums without all of the new technological additions? What do you think?

  42. If I was in charge of building a science museum I would make it as fun as possible. Since I don't particularly enjoy going to museums, because they are boring, I think that I would have a lot of hands on activities and demonstrations. I would include an exhibit about dinosaurs, because who doesn't like dinosaurs? For the dinosaur exhibit I would have fake “fossil digging,” kind of like what Christine said. I would also have an exhibit about North Carolina and its Prehistoric times, they have one of these exhibits in the new science museum. Just like Michelle said, I think that would be cool to learn about the prehistoric life and animals that lived here before we did. In museums things that I find most interesting are the hands on actives, like when you go to aquariums and you can hold the turtles, one of those kinda things, I get bored easily so that amuses me :). I think that the people that designed the museum might have surveyed the people coming in and out of the old exhibits and asked them what they would like and find most interesting and then look back at what the museum didn't have information on and then they would go from there.

  43. Jenna,

My question to you is: Do you go to a museum to be entertained or do you go to learn something????? If you are going to be entertained then you might go somewhere else. What is the real purpose to going to museums? You wrote about aquariums - what about other live animals? Is that fair to animals to keep them cages for the amusement of people? When is it OK to cage live animals for zoos and museums?

    ReplyDelete
  44. I go to museums to learn things. I think that museums would be more fun if you learned things by doing hands on activities and not just having to read things. Like I said before I think that I, like most other kids my age get bored in museums and need something different and that you don't see or hear everyday to learn something new. I think the real purpose of going to museums is to have fun while learning and then applying that information that learned in the museum to your life.I mentioned the aquarium before because that was the only museum like place that I had ever had a real hands on experience and been able to have some one talk to me about the animal and point things out. That was just an example of something I think I might want in my museum. I think that keeping animals in cages for the amusement of humans is not fair only under some circumstances. For example I know that at some museums and zoos that I have been to before only have animals that have been injured and now do not have the ability to live in the wild. I don't believe in the animals being cooped up in a cage if they have generally good health. If the animal is hurt and couldn't live in the wild and survive safely and would have had to been kept in a habitat or a cage for the rest of its life, then why not let people see it and put it.

  46. Mrs Moser,
I know i already posted a lot but my mom cornered me when i woke up and gave me last weeks newspapers about the museum. i learned some other cool facts-
    1. There is an exhibit that is called the Armpit Biodiversity project, which explores how odors associated with microbes living in armpits.
    2. There is a three story planet that is called the SECU Daily Planet.
    3. It cost 56 million to build and is expected to add 200,00 more visitors to the museum every year.
just thought I'd share some info!
    Cheers

Cool facts about the museum! Wish your Mom had not had to corner you to do this! Remember overdoing something is not a bad thing all of the time. I know you have posted before, but anytime you have something interesting to share, it is good to add to the blog! I will be posting another one soon, so watch for that one as well! Thanks for taking time to post the facts! 56 million dollars! How many years will it take to make that much money back in profits, especially when the museum will need to be updated often? I do not think the museum is there to make money by any means - guess it is there to try to get the attention of "future scientists of tomorrow".

  47. I am very excited to go and see the new museum! All of the exhibits sound fun and exciting but the most interesting looking one is the 10,000 gallon aquarium. This aquarium contains many exciting types of fish like the lion fish and the Atlantic stingray. They have these fish to show how they will affect the coast of North Carolina and its many wonderful beaches. I also think that the new theater is a very cool idea. It teaches students and other people all about different types of science, but in a way that is very fun. It is a 360 degree screen that really immerses people in the experience. Another cool exhibit is the model submersible. This is a room that you can go in and it will act as if you were going down in a submarine by raising the pressure and other things. I think that exhibits like these are the main things museums should have. The point of a museum is to teach people about something, whether it be art, science, or sports. Another main thing museums should do is to make the learning fun. If I were building a museum, I would make very fun and hands-on exhibits that would help people to learn about the topic while having a lot of fun. Another cool fact about the museum is that it uses almost all eco-friendly lights like LED's.

    1. I love the lion fish! The submersible room sounds really neat! I especially like the eco-friendliness of the museum, and how they can show the people what their actions can do if they don't change them soon! Now I want to go!!! looks like its time to use the pouting face on my parents!;)

    2. Lexie,

Do you know any specific eco-friendly things being done in the museum? Are they doing more than is typically done? Are any of the exhibits made from recycled materials? Is it energy efficient? See if you can find something out about this and reply.

    3. Drew,

Does the technology factors about the museum make it seem better to you? Suppose it was an "old-fashioned" museum with lots of glass cases full of animals, plants, rocks, etc. Do you think that a musuem can contain too much technology? Why not just stay at home and sit in front of a computer screen? What did you think about the video about glass? Does that make is seem like museums will become extinct? When do you think that might happen?

      Delete
    4. Yes, I think these new technology features will enhance the learning that happens at the museum. Although I think this, I would like an old-fashioned museum better. These museums really but you in the nevironment of the animal. I do think that something can contain too much technology. When it has too much technology, you focus on the technology more than the learning. It would be easier to sit in front of a computer. The glass video is really cool. I think museums will be extinct in 50 years. The tehnology will replace museums and you will be able to learn at home!

      Delete
  48. I am really looking forward to visiting the new museum. I think that the new aquarium will be really cool. The aquarium is 10,000 gallons and will hold cool fish that you can find in North Carolina. I really want to see the lionfish and will hopefully see it when I go to the museum. I think that seeing all of the fish in the aquarium will show people the diversity of life in North Carolina. Another cool exhibit that I hope to see is the model submersible. In this exhibit, you go into a simulator and it makes you feel like you are going under water. The pressure gets higher, just as if you were actually going down in the water. You explore the deep and get to hear scientists talk to you about their experiences and discoveries. I think that that would be a very cool experience and would be very educational at the same time. This exhibit will make learning fun. Another cool exhibit that I would like to see is the 360 degree theater. The theater will show all sorts of stuff that is happening to the Earth currently. For example, it will show the effects of climate change and causes for the depletion of the Earth's clean water supply. This, too, will be very educational for students and others in that they can see what our Earth is like today and how we can make it better. Many of my classmates are saying that they would like hands-on activities. Well this museum has it so I think that all of us would enjoy it. There is a room where people can do investigation labs. Here people can make different things and learn about how they work. One hands-on activity is making a model hurricane and learning about its effects. This would make learning fun which makes this museum even better. I think that the process of making a museum is not easy. You have to take in many perspectives, like making it appealing to both children and adults. I think that this museum is doing that very well by including hands-on activities, a very unique model submersible, and a cool aquarium. If I were designing a museum I would try to make things educational and fun. Hands-on activities and simulators would do this. I think that a fun museum is the best museum.

Do you think that museums will become extinct one day because of technology? Do museums have a life expectancy when they no longer attract people? How do you feel about keeping live animals in a museum? Does that attract people? Why do you think the museum had the addition to it? Do they hope to make money, educate, or perhaps inspire people to enter fields of science. What do you think??? The submersible that you mentioned is not really one that takes you under water - it is a room that makes you feel as if you are under the ocean.

    2. I do not think that museums will go extinct in the near future. I think that going to a museum is different than justing viewing information on the internet. Museums like the Smithsonian will never go extinct because the must see items in them. I do think that small museums, like the new one here, have a life expectancy because they do not hold anything that cannot be viewed online. I think that the online world will expand sending these museums out of bussiness. i do think that seeing live animals will attract people but after the first time, it gets boring for people. I think that the new museum really just wants to educate more people about or world and they are not jst in it for the money. I hope that that answered your questions Mrs. Moser.

  49. I think this museum will be really cool. I am looking forward to go to it. I was on the web site and they are going to have an astronaut come and talk. I think this would be really cool because I love space and stars. I think it would be cool if he brought some pictures he took or a rock from the moon. I would most definitely go and listen to him. Since I love space, I would add a planetarium. We went on a field trip and went to one. I thought it was really cool. It actually feels like you are in space and traveling through the stars. So it would be a good learning experience to see what space is actually like. There will also be a cool aquarium there. This has really cool looking fish in it. In my museum I would have a touching tank with some cool animals, like sting rays (without the stinger), and some pretty fish. Everyone loves touching tanks because it is hands on. I would also have a tank with a booluga whale. I saw one, and I think they are really cool. Kids like when there is a diver in the tank because they think it is interesting. I know my family loves to go to museums and actually do something instead of just read. I thing it is important to make everyone included in the museum. Instead of just having things for little kids, I would have activities for teenagers. The butterfly garden is a really cool idea because you are experiencing the butterflies habitat. This is a learning, and a fun experience. This is what all museums should do: make learning fun! But, if I created a museum I would make a break room. Or a non-educational room. That just has sparkles and bubbles in it. In a museum I went to, they had a bubble room . I loved it, until I was 6 and I wasn't allowed to go in it anymore. So this fun room will be for all ages. I think it is important to have a room just for playing and having fun. Kids will get bored just walking around reading.

Good ideas. Do you like more or less technology in a museum? Would you prefer live animals or lots of virtual computer programs to interact with?

    2. I like more technology in a museum for some exhibits. I think the space exhibit would turn out really cool if there was a lot of techonlogy. But, I also think it is important to just experience the animals, computers cant reinact that kind of thing. I prefer to interact with the animals. I get tired of looking at a computer screen. I like going out of the house for an adventure. It is good to get out, and experience new things.

  50. I think that museums are not in it for the money. I think they do it because they want kids to learn something when they go there. I also think that museums are designed to make kids interested in science. That is why there are some interactive parts in a museum. I think the museums do it because they want the kids to get into a science related career and the museums help them achieve that.

  51. I do not think that there will be museums in 100 years. I think this for 2 reasons, the internet and schools. I think that the internet, as it has already done, will "take over the world" not literally but I think that going to places like museums, will be converted to online exhibits and online videos, virtual tours, and tutorials. I also think that museums will not exhist in 100 years because schools and the technology in the schools will increase and they will use the online world of virtual tours, tutorials and videos instead of taking the children and students out to these places.

What would be the problem with that setup?

  52. I think museums will one day be extinct because of technology. I think this because nobody would want to leave their home to see something virtually when you can see everything on the computer. I would not like to go to a museum if everything was virtuall. It would seem like nothing is real to me. I would want to see something real in an exhibit and at least something that is a fake stuffed animal that looks life like. I would want to go to a museum with less technology. I mean yes some technology can be cool but you can't over do it. I would like to see live animals but it wouldn't be fair to them because they would have to live in close quaters and in captivity. I think it would be better for animals to live in zoos than in museums.

    2. The problem with this type of world is that if everything is envoled with technology nobody would want to get up and go somewhere, like a museum, if everything they could see was on the computer. It would kind of make everyone lazy because they would just search everything on a computer and not go to the museums to see the actual artifacts. They woud just look for a picture of it on the internet. What would be missing from the technology world would be the real life factor. If pictures of an artifact could be found on a computer screen nobody would go to museums to see the real life artifact in person. If there were no more museums in a technology world I would be mad and upset because I would want to go to the museum to see the real artifact in person and not through a picture from the internet on a computer screen.

  53. Sorry for the late post- busy weekend.
The new science museum is quite interesting. It has many new exhibits, including a 40x40 ft screen (about half the size of a large IMAX screen), a 100 gallon aquarium, and other pretty cool exhibits. Probably the most interesting is the new SECU Daily Planet, which houses the new screen. This center is used for many multimedia purposes, and I think it's probably the coolest exhibit. If I were to design a museum, I would try to make it both aesthetically pleasing and informative. As we discussed in class, museums really have to draw attention to their exhibits with flashy material or hands-on activities in order for guests to actually look at the exhibit. So, in turn, if I were to design a museum, I would build lots of fun activities. I would include natural science, as well as computer science. Computer science is a growing topic, and I would be good for people to understand that information. I would also have life sciences. It would be pretty hard to design a museum. I think we build museums partly for government money, but there is not really a substantial amount of money to do much with in today's society. Any money that is earned should be used for improving the museum or for a good cause, though. I believe the main reasons for building a museum are to partly educate people (I know I have learned from museums) and to provide an attraction for people. Also I agree with Alex Shearer, they inspire and motivate people to solve problems of today's world. Overall, museums provide a fun way to learn, and hopefully I will be able to hit up the new museum sometime in the near future.

Do you think that museums as we know them today will become extinct? What will museums (if they exist) look like in 50 or 100 years? How do you think we need to balance the use of technology and actual exhibits (manipulatives, animals, aquariums, etc.)? If the museum was only composed of technology and artificial simulations would that be a good musuem?

    ReplyDelete
  55. Mrs. Moser,

I did not get to go to the grand openng. I was way to busy. After doing some researc on the musuem i found out that the museum allready offers workshops to do. The musuem also has a 3d theatre showing films. I also found out that the new section has a new animal visiting activity at certain times in the day.

  56. I think that what the science museum did was a great thing. I think that adding these exhibits to the museum helped them out a lot with income and it made a visit to the museum a lot of fun. They had showed some new films in a 3D theatre that would seem fun even though I haven't seen much 3D films. I also heard that they added new animal exhibits where children could interact with these animals. I think that this was a great addition because I remember when I was a youngling I liked to play with animals. I think overall what the science museum did will help them out and also make it a lot more fun for visitors.

    2. I do think that musuems will become extinct one day. I think this will happen because electronics will rule over everything else and no one wants to go see the musuem. I think that people will just start looking up the information on the computer rather then going them selves or taking a school field trip. School field trips is the only way i think musuems will not go extinct.

    4. I do not think that schools will become extinct. At least not in the next 50 years. I do think that people can learn from technology but they cannot learn all they need to have to a successful life from technology. The only thing that is bad about learning form a computer screen would be the hands on experience you get. I think it is a cool idea to have schools meet at a museum but i don't think they are a good place to have a classroom.

    5. Yes Mrs. Moser I believe that museums will become extinct. I think that people will use technology to figure things out instead of going to museums. I think that they will close because of computers and technology and all the information will be on the internet. I dont't think that people will revisit the museums if they have already gone.

  57. From Ben Zemonek:

I honestly think that in 50 years museums will still exist but I dont think they will be as popular at all. They might run out of history things to do fun activities with. Thats why their popularity is declining. They might even have to start doing exhibits on recent stuff like 9/11 or some other recent occurence.

    Ben,

If no one comes to a museum is it worth having? Do you think that having so much technology can be a bad thing? What is missing if you only interact with a computer screen? What about going to school with a computer each day - no people - just a computer. How would you feel about that?

    ReplyDelete
  58. I think museums will partially become extinct. In 50-100 years, they will have evolved to suit the current time period, but I think they will still be a place to go to have fun and learn things. In terms of balancing the use of technology, I think it is not a bad thing for technology to take over a museum. There is a limit, though. I think too much tech can get boring, and knowing kids they will love to slam all of the buttons and scratch the screens mercilessly. Also, if there is too much simulations and technology, the art of the "museum" is lost.

    ReplyDelete
  59. I believe in about 45 years museums will became for the most extinct, there will be those museums such as all the Smithsonian museums that will still be in use.
I think that schools will not be extinct because you would have to learn a computer somewhere and actually be interested in some subjects to actually look them up and learn about them. You cannot learn life lessons from technology, but you can from school and learn how to socialize which can help with jobs and negotiations in life.

  60. I think people come to museums only to entertain themselves. There are a other reasons why like having to go on a field trip or research for a project, but if educational reasons were not included, then they would most likely be to find something to do. Because of this, museum designers want to put on a show right when the visitor takes their first step into the museum. I find that the big globe outside of the new science museum does give many people a interest in what that museum contains. To keep on with the entertainment many museums want to give demonstrations or put in hands on activities. Other times, museums just want to showcase a unique topic. In Seattle, I've been to a two in one museum that was showcasing science fiction and hard rock. I'v also heard of weird museums in america that showcase PEZ and dentures. Also, museums want to center around something big or valuable. I went to the science fiction/Hard Rock museum months after Michael Jackson's death. They had a display of one of Michael Jackson's glitter gloves. The big globe could be the center of the new science museum here. I wish I could have gone to the grand opening of the science museum, but I had other plans to attend to for my own self. However, I find that museums do have an expiration date. As technology expands, no one will want to drive to the museum and waste time there. However, I find that electronic museums might exist on computers or electronic tablets. With this, many families can find education fun at home.

When you go to a new city do you usually try to go visit the local museums? Is this something you find fun to do? Are museums tourist attractions? Are they meant to be a "safe display" place for artifacts and high tech equipment? Are they a showcase? Do you think you learn more from museums or from reading articles on the internet? Do you think that some people walk through musuems and do not "really see" what is all around them? That seems like a big waste to me. How can museums encourage people to take a good look at what they have to offer?

  64. Natalie D.,

Missed you in class today. I do not like to see live animals in small cages in museums. It just seems too cruel. Now, if a zoo has a large enclosure for animals (like the NC Zoo) then it does not seem so bad. I think museums keep live animals to attract people - it is all about getting people through the door. If NC pays for an addition to the Science Museum, then the museum MUST show that people are actually coming. They will attract people anyway they can. It is a little sad, I think. Natalie, do you think that museums will be gone in 100 years? It may be possible for people to see everything they need to see from home and never even leave their house. How would you like a world like that?? I would miss vacations and trips to museums. Would you?

  65. i think that museums will eventually go out of business. But it depends on how fast technology grows. I would much rather go to a Museum and do something than being stuck in my house. I totally agree with your comments! I think that technology is great but if it gets overdone it can keep people from being sensitive to each other. Human contact and interaction are just way too important to use only a computer screen to communicate. 67. Sorry about that Mrs. Moser, It's me Justin Kissell. I do find that yes, they can be in competition for visitors. It is very likely that the Raleigh Science museum is trying to look more appealing than its Durham counterpart. Other times, they want to make a subject more appealing than other subject. In my opinion, I find that science museums are much more entertaining than history or art museums because of the abundance of hands on activities. In the Durham Museum of Life and Science, they combine countless indoor experiments and outdoor experiments that always appeal to kids and adults. I loved this museum so much, that I had my ninth birthday there. For improving museums, I think the best way to renovate is to hand out surveys to visitors. These surveys should include favorite part of museum, least favorite part of museum, overall scale, would you recommend this museum to others, and what would you like to see in the museum. With a good collection of surveys, The architects and museum management can choose what to add, change, and remove exhibits and showcases while staying within budget.

  68. I think that live animals in museums interest the public. I think that is makes a museum more appealing, but I also think that it is very cruel to animals. They are stuck in their little crates and pens. I would hope that people think this is cruel to the animals and not support it. I also think that there are more ways to learn than looking at a captive live animal through glass. I do think that they are more appealing to the public, but I do not believe that it is fair for the live animals.

  69. If I created a museum I would have all kinds of exhibits. Exhibits about animals, geography, and many other things. I think there should be hands on activities and where you can go up to an exhibit it will read some facts to you. This way you don't have to read as much. Why I would have hands on activities and places where you can listen to facts is because people get bored very easily in museums and don't want to read. This will make more people want to go to the museum and and want to learn. The most interesting things in museums are the activities, if there are ones. When people are deciding on what to include I think they just put in the things that most interests them. I also think that museums are built to entertain and educate people. When people go to museums they usually want to learn something or be entertained. Museums can bothe educate and entertain or just educate or just entertain. For example Some museums educate and entertain like fossil museums. Some just educate like history museums and some just entertain like the random museums that are about weird things. So, museums are good things to have around because you be entertained and educated.

  70. I think that converting all of the things that we do today, like shopping, school and going other places such as museums to some sort of technology would be both a good and a bad thing. I think the good things would be helping the environment, by not polluting the air, and it would reduce the number of people on the road ways, there for increasing safety. Some of the bad things are people staying in their homes all of the time, also I think that Internet safety would become and issue, instead of doing school work I think that other things such as games and Internet programs and websites will become a distraction. Another bad thing I think would be people doing their school work on the computer and not really getting their work done as efficiently as they would in an actual school setting. The final and last bad thing about converting everything to technology would be the “going under” of small buisnesses. I think that not going to school and leaving my house everyday wouldn't be as fun, but in some ways I would like it, I wouldn't have a time that I had to wake up and get ready and I could do other things and work in school around it. I think a problem with that set up is people not focusing on their school work as much as they normally would in a school setting, like mentioned before.

  71. Justin,

I agree with your thoughts. I particularly like the Durham Life and Science Museum. It has both inside and outside exhibits which I really like. The Raleigh museum would not be able to do that sort of thing because of the location. What kind of background and education do you think a person would need in order to be in charge of a large science museum? I think it would be a huge job and lots of people would second guess the decisons that were made. I guess you can't please everyone all of the time.

Christopher Raymond said he was disappointed in the museum. I guess since we talked about it so much, he thought it might be more than it actually was when he got there. How can a museum try to appeal to all types and ages of people? Do you think that it is possible to offer something that will interest everyone in one museum? Do you think that it takes too much to catch the attention of young people today? Is that a good thing? Life has changed so the museums of the future will have to change too. How to you see museums evolving over the next 50 years? Or do you think they will no longer exist in 50 years?

The only museums taht should not be changed are history museums this is because those things are meant to be that way, but science museums need to change constantly in order to keep the amusement factor high and have it stay there.

I think that in order for a museum to be successful, the museum should be hands on but educational. Also, the museum should have a fun factor and with these qualities, the museum will be running smoothly. however, after looking at Katlyn's video, I came to the conclusion that if the people in the future are smart enough to build such a unique system of glass, then the information of the past will have already been learned, and if the information is ever questioned, then the information can easily be reached at their fingertips, literally.
If museums want to be successful, then they are going to have to work very hard in the future in or the will not remain

    Emma,

Would you be just as happy to see the exhibits from a science museum on your computer? What do you think you might miss if you did not actually visit a museum?

  74. If i were to have a science museum i would include many technologically advance exhibits. I would do this because many people today are used to have technology in their lives and they would enjoy the activities with the technology. I would also have animals exhibits. These animals would have large areas to roam and live. I feel if the animals don't have enough space they won't be happy. I love museums that aren't only exhibits. The exhibits get old after a while. I wouldnt be happy seeing a museum online. The enjoyment about museums is being able to go to the museum and enjoy the time with friends or family. I also think a cluster of museums would be good. The different museums would help make the variety factor stand out. When people go to museums they like to be able to walk around and not feel like they are being bored. Overall i think a technologically advanced museum would be the most enjoyable.

At the rate that technology is growing, do you think it would be possible to have the same experiences in your own home in front of a computer? What will museums in 50 years have to do in order to attract people? If it costs millions of dollars to build musuems will it be worth the expense if people can get the same experiences at home with their computer/ TV's , etc.?

      Delete
    2. i think that a person cant have the same experiences at home as they could at a real museum. People enjoy and can learn better when they are seeing things in person not over a computer. Museums will have to constantly change. They will have to change because people will not enjoy going from one type of lifestyle to another. By this I mean that their everyday life is full of technology and then they go to a museum which is not technologically adavnced, it wouldnt be the same. I feel that museums should slowly try to be technologically advanced. Not all at once though. This will help save money and attract more people. The museum's could open up new exhibits to attract people which in turn would raise money. The museums could also have auctions which would bring a donation to a new museum

I do believe that museums should have live animals. The most interesting exhibits to go to are the ones that you can relate to and imagine about later. There is no point to go to a museum and not be interested. It is a lot easier to be interested in an exhibit if say a monkey is screaming at you. That makes for some pretty cool memories. People love to go to places where they have had strong memories created, and who doesn't like monkeys. If museums have live animals they can create more memories. The more memories the more people the more money the museum makes. This makes all parties happy. People love to bring their friends and family to places they think they will find interesting and fun. Museums with animals are always more entertaining and fun at least to me.

There has been a lot of chitter chatter about the new science museum. However like technology this chitter chatter can soon disappear. When museums first come out like new technology, they are the thing to have and do. However after a lot of people get and or go to these things they soon lose their coolness. They soon become a been there done that kinda thing. They no longer have that flare to them. This is because so many people have literally been there and done that. For the people that have not been there done that feel like they have with all the talk about it. To me I feel that things are always played out and up to much. Thus makes people bored of old news. So that is why new museums, technology, etc., are so interesting. However, this excitment does not last long. Museums have shown all they can ofer and after a while people get bored. So yes like almost everything museums have experation dates.

Olivia, I think you are correct in your thinking. It is sad that it seems o take more and more to capture our attention. It makes it hard to get people to take a look without something really expensive and flashy. What type of person would be needed to be in charge of a science museum of the future? If they exist what will they have to offer? Maybe trips into space??? What would it take to get people inside of the museum?

    ReplyDelete
  76. Brian,
You may be right, but who knows. It just seems that if museums continue to expand and become more dynamic that they will become so expensive to construct and visit, that many people may not be able to go. Do you think it is wrong to spend so much money to build musuems when people in the world do not have enough to eat? How can we justify spending millions of dollars on a museum when people are sick and dying in the US and around the world???

    ReplyDelete
  77. There is never going to be enough. What i mean is that no matter how much money we give to people who need the food, not everyone who needs it will get it. I feel that in the regions of the world countries should help each other. Neighbors loan things to their other neighbors all the time. This is what should happen overseas. Countries in Africa that are thriving should be able to help out their neighbors. The amount of money it would cost to ship and pay the people to hand out food would eventually become more than building a museum. I still think that food is more important than a museum, but im not sure how big of an impact it owuld make.

  78. One of the new exhibits that I researched is the wildlife exhibit. It has photo competitons that people can enter. The winner of this last compition was Gene Furr. He also entered 30 of his other photos in the contest. I also discoverd another exhibit,Genghis Khan: The Exhibition. It is the largest collection ever assembled of the treasures of the Empire of Genghis Khan. I didnt get to make it to the grand opening. But, if I had the opportunity to go to the exhibit, I would have liked to see these two exhibits. But as I was reading through everyones post I would agree with Miller because she is right about how they can go out of business if they are not charging them to come in. Or if they are then its not enough and they will not get there money out of the mueseum. But overall I enjoyed researching the different exhibits.

I will no longer be commenting on your personal comments to this BLOG. I have posted replies to just about everyone and now it is your turn to think and respond to any of the questions that I (or other students) have posed. I will read your comments and give you credit for participating, but I will not make specific comments on your comments. Read through the posts and my return questions if you have trouble coming up with something to say. For those of you in eighth period, Christopher Raymond visited the museum and was not very impressed. I think all of the talk about the addition had him expecting something more spectacular than he saw. The addition costs over 50 million dollars - was it worth the expense and how will we know that????? Happy Blogging! Thank you to everyone who has taken time to think and comment. Check out Katlyn's video on you tube. It may give you some "food for thought".

  80. I always loved when i was a little kid.. going to a museum on a saturday with my dad and going to the science museum. there would usually be kind of a "kid section" in the museum. in the old science museum there was a play space where you could dress up as animals, they had puppets of different animals, my favorite thing was the bee hive they had. they would have contests to see who could find the queen bee first(I never won). I also remember in the old science museum when you would walk through this "tunnel" and it was like you were underneath the ocean with the underwater plants and fish over you. This would always freak Lydia out when we walked through and she would walk all the way around the exhibit and meet my dad and me on the other side. I also liked in museums when they have people come and talk and in exhibts and they set it up as if you were walking in that time period, woods, beach ect. So if i was setting up a museum i would have a floor stricly aimed for 2-10 year olds on the enviorment and different animals where they could run around and play. For main exhibits, i think dinosaurs can entertain any age from 0-435 so i would like to have a floor about that. One of the final things as an exhbit would be a mix between health not just for humans but for animals too and enviormental issues just because these are things everybody should now about. In everyone of these exhiits there would be hands on activities but they would go a bit farther then just hands on. I would like to have kind of mysteries to solve with employees that act as "actors". When i was small and still do see a person role playing something it always got me more engaged then just lisining to a guy reading facts off a sheat of paper. I also would like to have a huge outdoor " backyard". I would do this because Kids like going outside. Maybe there would be a playground on the grounds somewhere but i would like to have a garden with animals for kids to learn about them and actually see them instead of being inside the museum just learning by looking at pictures and words. One of the last things i would include would be something like jurassic park where you go on a cart/car on a track and go through the woods seeing different dinosaurs and plants (all fake though). I was able to go to the n new museum when it opened and i did like it. My favorite thing was the inside of the globe where you could skype people and there picture would show up inside the globe and they would have little movies shown on the globe that looked 3-D. To me the new museum had a lot of hands on activities but to me not " true hands on activities" they were mostly just touchscreen computers with little activities but then again i went the musuem when it just opened and not everything was set up yet. but overall i did like it and i'm planning to go back again when every part of the museum is fully opened.

  81. If I were to have my own science museum, I would want to include hands-on activities in it. I wouldn't want only hands-on activities though, since supplies would cost too much. I would also like to include things like computer activies to be able to give lessons while the viewer isn't bored. There would also be normal exhibits where you just look and read on what the exhibit was about. When I go to a museum I like it and tend to pay more attention when they give me a lab or activity to do. I liked how in this museum, there was a talk from an astronaut from NASA. Having someone actually explain their experience is much better than just reading about it. Even though you can't have said person talk at your museum all the time, it's still better having them come for a special visit since it brings publicity to the museum. I think when the museum was established, they didn't want it to be just a normal museum that would one day be forgotten and rarely have any visitors. They wanted it to stay lively all the time, seeing as they're having so many speakers come in to talk about things. On the other hand, having all these speakers come out and talk to the visitors can get very expensive so having more gift shops would be a good idea. I really like what I've seen of this museum, even though I haven't been there yet.

  82. I went to the museum the first weekend it opened. It was overall very good. I think it had a lot of stuff aimed to younger kids with them being able to learn about different animals, touch different animal furs, play with the light up DNA, go and explore the dinosaurs and their bones in the dinosaur lab and watch vets take care of animals such as birds. There are also things aimed at older kids such as seeing what different animal species came to America on accident on ships from places like China. Something that can be aimed at all age groups is in the inside of the globe. It is very fun to watch it light up and show pictures that look 3-d. It shows things such as the different seasons and our solar system. This was one of my personal favorites. There is also a park/yard on outside on the top of the building. It is very cool to look out and see some of down town. Another thing I was able to see that can relate to our science class this year is on the walkway to the old museum on the ground it lists the different eras and periods such as the Jurassic, Mesozoic and Devonian that we learned about. I agree with my brother that most of the hands on activities are touch screen computers, but then again we were at the museum when not everything was fully up and running. Overall, it is a pretty good museum.

I feel that any age group can benifit from this museum or any type of museum! The point of a museum is to learn and explore new things. Little kids can benifit it for just knowledge of things. Teenagers like myself could possibly go to a museum to experince something that they are learnign in school or are doing a project on. Even scientists can learn from museum. They can go to museuns to maybe learn something they didn't learn in college or maybe they just want to get a hands on activity to learn. Knowledge is always good to have and try to understand. A museum is one of the best places where knowledge is expressed.

Good ideas Matt! Thank you for sharing.

If you were in charge of building a science museum what types of exhibits and attractions would you include? Why? What types of things do you find most interesting in museums? How do you think the people who planned the museum decided on what to include? Do you have suggestions?
If I was in charge of building a science museum I would have hands on exhibits and attractions. My first attraction would be about Dinosaurs. Then I would do one about the sea life and how much we have explored. I also would like to have an exhibit on Pangaea. Then I would add the modern animals and that sort of stuff. I would have a trainer come in with live animals and you could touch the animals and other cool stuff. Then finally a butterfly exhibit with butterflies everywhere and other insects. I would run my science exhibit this way because when I was young these were the best exhibits. The things I find most interesting are the dinosaur exhibits and the videos of the dinosaurs in the museums. I think the people who run museums have people tested to find what the majority of the population would like to have in the museum. My suggestion is that more instructional videos about the things in the museum, it would make the museum fun and interactive, without spending so much money. There should also be a place where kids can roam free away from their parents for a little while and learn about kid stuff.

  85. If i were incharge of a museum i would include a ton of exhibits and interactive activities for all the visitors. i would include the most popular exhibits that other museums have and a lot of new ones. The most interesting that i find in museums are mostly the hands on stuff and like the space shuttle things. Also all the animals and birds that museums have. i think they went to different museums and saw all the exhibits they had and also new ones so that a lot of new visitors come. one of mysuggestions would be is getting a lot of animals outside the museum and inside. i would include a lot of different exhibits like lemurs and a lot of animals that are almost extinct. i would also include a bunch of hands on like the space shuttle thing.ialso don't think there wll be any museums for people to waste money if there is a ton of stuff online. In the future i think there will be nott a lot of museums but online mueseums. POSTED BY JOHN ANDREALA

  86. If i was in charge of building a mueseum i would include lots of interactive activities because i always seem to learn better with labs and hands on stuff. Also i dont think museums will ever go extinct. Its one thing to see all the exhibits online but its cooler to see it in person.

  87. I agree with others and disagree with others when I say that museums will not go extinct. I think that people need to have a visible live copy of information that people can read. I think people learn better when it is actually a person or a plaque below a picture or diarama rather than just reading off a screen. I also think that museums such as those that hold our founding documents and art museums couldn't go extinct. For me seeing a copy of the declaration or seeing the real thing is a big thing just like seeing a copy of a painting is way less interesting that the actual painting itself. As far as educational museums I think they will change a lot and adapt to what people want such as interactive activities and visual pictures and diagrams. I think a lot of the just information won't be most of the museum and more simulators, petting rooms, and exciting adventures in museums like scavenger hunts where you have to participate. I think that museums won't go extinct because they are physical and the real thing, not an iphone.

I think the human factor is very important! Without the personal contact that you get by being with someone in person, there is something missing. If museums get to the point of being totally based on technology, I will not be going anymore. I can do that type of thing with a computer. Thanks for sharing.

What will museums be like in 50 years if they still exist?

    Replies
    1. In 50 years museums will be different. I think with more technology we will have more information that can help us recreate animals/reptiles/creatures that have gone extinct. A museum in 50 years will most likely have a section where a lot of creatures are made life size out of there bones. I think museums will have a lot of screens in front of exhibits where you can really go in depth about the animal. One thing that I know will change is the architecture of the museums. I think they will use the space they have very efficiently. Another thing that I think will change, that I hope doesn't is having actual people in the exhibits that can answer your questions. I think computers are sometimes limited because they don't always get to the point when you ask a question. I am excited to see what will happen because I love seeing evolution and new inventions. I don't want just to be a technology society, but a people society.

I love your comment about having a people society rather than a technology society! That is so important! Never forget that you said that and never forget that being human is very special - no type of technology can replace that!

You have a futuristic view of the world. I sure hope you are wrong. I would really miss the old types of museums. I like walking around reading and thinking about what I am seeing. Would you miss that? Do you think you are ready for this type of technological future? What about schools? Could you learn as well from a computer as you do from a teacher??? How about parenting? Do you think children could be raised via computers? What about personal contact? When will we say "enough is enough"?

    1. Yeah I would miss that but that would be the advancement in life, Mrs. Moser imagine what your grandparents would think of the world today; having cars that can go at a speed of 200mph and personal computers, phones, ipods, the internet, and many other advanced things. I think that I will be ready for this type of future, because it can be interesting, and creation of software and technology is the largest growing job market. Schools eventually down the road could be dying out more and more. Eventually computers could act like a teacher like having a Siri(iphone computer software that can answer questions, make schedules, and other things) be able to teach lessons to someone. I do not think that you can replace a parent. Children could be raised by a computer, but the personalty of the child is unknown how it would turn out to be. I do not think life will ever stop evolving or being enough, people will come up with new things to imporove on.

  90. The new museum downtown is very intersting and has a cool design. Sadly, I did not get the chance to go to the actual museum. I have been planning a trip with my aunt to go over summer! The Museums that catch my attention is the ones with the hands on activities. The other exhibits I personally like is simulators. At the new museum downtown, there is an underwater submersable simulator. This is very cool and the future of museums. Museums are ment to attract a young audiance, to better the world. The new museum definitly does that with its exterier. A giant globe catches everyones attention and attracts them in (especially for free)!I personally think museums will make a comeback and will give birth to future scientists. The last thing, museums could do to have a bigger audiance is my incorperating IMAX theatre. A cool movie such as going to space, deep sea is very interesting. All and all, museums are a great bonding activity, school feild trip, and a great place to further expand your knowledge for the future.

Relate the video about glass to the issues around the museum. Will technology cause museums to become extinct? If so, how long in the future will this happen? What things can be replaced with technology and which things will still demand personal contact?

    ReplyDelete

    1. Well, by seeing the video today Mrs. Moser, I could infer that technology has developed and become much better over the past decade. Museums are meant to display and show history in an old type of atmosphere according to the actual history being displayed. In the video today, nearly their entire life was based around highly advanced technology. This technology has an almost addictive characteristic to humans. Once they discover all the things that technology can do, they become attached, and sooner or later will want better and more advanced technology. If people are constantly wanting new technology to get better and more modernized then the desire to want to go and see OLD history will sooner or later fade away and eventually will no longer be a necessity to the every day persons routine/lives. So yes, I believe that technology has a stronger advantage to take over the minds of people in return not needing them to see old and used history. I estimate that this will become true in around 20-25 years, because once more and more technology advance as quickly as it has over the years, we will no longer need museums.

      Delete
  92. I think they will Mrs. Moser because more people will be going home and just be looking at the stff at home and not willing or wanting to go to the museum. If I had all that I would not leave my house. But also if there was hand on stuff I would consider leaveing the house. But if this would happen then a lot of people wount spend the money to drive or go in or to the museum if they can jsut see it at home.

  94. I do not think in 50 years museums will be extinct. I think in mabye 100 years or more they will be extinct. In 50 years I think museums will keep up-grading. They will keep adding more technology to try to make people come into their museums. I think in 100 years or more they might over do it with technology and nobody would want to come because they could find everything on a computer screen. People would not also want to go because nothing would be the same where you walk around and read about ancient artifacts that are in a glass case. Nobody would want to go to a museum with a huge touch screen and scroll through looking at pictures of artifacts. So, no I don't think mueums will be extinct in 50 years I just think that the popularity level would go down because of so much technology in a museum.

  95. I don't know if museums will be extinct in the future, but i certainly hope not! Even with all the advances in technology that we will have, I still think that it is better to actually be there. I love high-tech exhibits and I love hands on activities. I think that there is a fine line between a good amount of technology and technology taking over our lives. As long as we don't cross this line, we will be okay. in this day and age, it takes more and more to get people excited about museums. I think that we all have to enjoy the simple things in life. Advances are amazing, don't get me wrong, but sometimes we need to take a step back and just be satisfied.

  96. I think that museums need to upgrade their technology in the exhibits to bring in the public. This would be very appealing to the public. Museums will not be extinct in the next 50 years. Like Alan said, museums like the Smithsonian's will never be extinct. I think that are too important to the nation and world for that matter to run out of business. They contain too many important artifacts and items in them. So I believe museums will be here in 50 years, but after that I think they will lose popularity.

There are to many important things in meauseams such as documents and ancient artifscts. If meauseams come extinct were will these anrtifacts go? If they go somewhere else then i guarantee we wil still be able to see these artifacts because they are just to important not to learn about. Also after watching the video about the glass world in science today I am scared to see what are future is like. If we are gonna live like that then whats the point of living. I think it will be like a virtual reality type of thing and you will be in a museum beng able to interact with all of the exhibits or it might even be like you are actually there. I think the really important museums like the Smithsonian will stay in bussinesses because people around the country know about it but they would visit it mor elike a historic site.
